Take the broad bean. Once it was thought entirely unremarkable to produce broad beans. Most people didnt really like them, but that was because most people left on the bitter outer skin. Carefully and laboriously peeled, broad beans are really delicious and can be cooked in all kinds of ways. The only social problem with the broad bean, in those innocent days, was that the obvious effort which went into preparing it could be felt by the guest to be somewhat oppressive - a combination of showing off and bullying. Fortunately, though, most guests are more interested in themselves than in the labours of the cook, and so most people didnt mind. Then, suddenly, the broad bean became fashionable. Sadly, I had to abandon it and wait until the fashion passed, as indeed it did. But now, to my horror, I find it is in fashion once again. At least I assume it is, because we were recently given delicious broad beans on toast as a first course in the house of the most achingly fashionable couple I know. This time Im not going to give in; however chic it may be, Im going to carry on cooking broad beans, especially at this time of year. To me they mean early summer, just as much as Jersey potatoes and mint. They are not only delicious, with their bitter, subtle taste; they also look beautiful in their satisfactory roundness faintly reminiscent, I used to think as a schoolgirl, of the curving buttocks of the naked Greek athletes portrayed in my classical history textbooks. The intense green is beautiful too, especially if, like me, you use frozen beans. It cannot be denied that peeling broad beans, though easy, is very time-consuming. The busy cook cannot possibly do it. There are some Middle Eastern food shops or supermarkets which sell broad beans ready peeled and frozen. Otherwise it is a question of delegation. Children can be very useful: their small, clever fingers are ideally suited to the work. Unfortunately, though, children are a terrible health hazard in the kitchen. They have no interest in even the most elementary hygiene and one has no idea where those clever fingers have been; I always reject any offering of food cooked by children and handled by filthy childish hands. In the populous state of California, DCs have taken a huge hit in workers compensation claims. Meanwhile, other states are rearranging their personal injury laws. I thought this subject matter would make for a nice “interview.” The following is what I would say if asked for my thoughts on the current state of affairs in personal injury trends and what the future holds for chiropractic practitioners. A: I think that in order to understand the big picture, you need to parse out the contributions of the major players in this business, if I can call it that. The players are the insurers, the lawyers, the doctors, the various experts sometimes relied upon during the litigation process, the government and, most importantly, the victims of trauma. Q: Lets start with insurers - what are their contributions to the current personal injury environment?
Taxation of Personal Injury Awards Recent legislation, as part of the Revenue Reconciliation Act of 1989, may have settled some of the other areas of disagreement. The legislation provides that the exclusion for personal injury awards does not apply to any punitive damages in connection with a case not involving physical injury or physical sickness.(1) Thus, it would appear that all damages, both compensatory and punitive received for physical injuries will be excluded from gross income. Only compensatory damages received for non-physical injuries will be excludable from gross income. Punitive damages received for non-physical injuries will be taxable. The new provision is effective for amounts received after July 10, 1989, in tax years ending after that date, unless a binding agreement, decree or award is in effect before then. Despite the clarifying legislation, areas for disagreement between taxpayers and the IRS still exist regarding the nature of non-physical injury awards involving libel or defamation of character. Lets examine the statutory provisions, administrative pronouncements and judicial interpretations affecting the taxation of awards for libel or defamation of character.
Q: I was involved in a car accident last night. I havent been to the doctor, although my neck is still very stiff I dont want to go to a solicitor. Can I sue for personal injury on my own? A: You can act for yourself in a personal injury action for less than L1000 in value. However, you must produce medical evidence to prove your case, so it is imperative you go to your GP immediately. You could also act for yourself if the injury was less than 1000 but it would not be treated as a small claim. Solicitors costs would be recoverable if you lost.

WRITERS block is a devilish ailment, and I had a bad case of it when I began writing this column. I spent hours reading such magazines as Wired and MacWorld, surfing the Internet, and otherwise avoiding putting words on paper. My purpose in putting these videos on my site is to capture the subtleties of expert practice. To that end, I have included study questions that I hope will focus attention on the intricate ways master teachers practice their craft. Incidentally, my wife Sharon is the teacher in the first video, and she doesnt like my calling the video clip Shared Reading. The term seemed appropriate when the clip was recorded during the spring of 1996, but today I guess people refer to this kind of activity as buddy reading.

When you ask kids whats at the top of their holiday wish list, you inevitably get the same answer: video games. Funny thing is, since Nintendo of America, Redmond, Wash., introduced its DS Lite, just as often well hear that very response from adults as well. You can connect with a local wireless network of up to 16 players. It also has PictoChat, a built-in chat room that allows you to send and receive wireless messages and pictures to other DS users within your range. With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection–a free service–you can play games over the Internet using your DS and a WFC compatible game. Of course, the best thing about the DS is the whole new level of games developed for this advanced technology. One of our favorites is Big Brain Academy. After testing your ability to Think, Analyze, Memorize, Compute, and Identify, the Professor then calculates the weight of your brain in grams, gives you a letter grade (suffice it to say we were humbled on our first few attempts), and finally determines your brain type. It lets you know where you performed best and suggests areas to take practice drills. After many such drills, we were able to improve our scores considerably. Similarly, Brain Age is another game designed to exercise the mind, prompting you to solve simple math equations quickly and read aloud. These exercises are designed to keep the mind fresh. An easy-to-use Sudoku game also is included.

Spend your vacation in the kitchen? Destination cooking schools make it fun Run for 21 years by Mary Risley, Tante Maries is one of the Wests growing number of destination cooking schools–academies where you can hone your culinary skills in stimulating surroundings. These schools cluster in desirable vacation spots, from San Francisco to Santa Fe. They have hands-on classes for the novice, expert, and intermediate cook (like me), with course lengths ranging from a single day to an entire week. Some schools even branch out to conduct culinary tours of their regions. All of them offer a chance to gain practical cooking expertise and send you home with a batch of recipes and newly honed skills to apply in your own kitchen.

In a personal injury action, defendant sought a partial summary judgment in Fellenz v. Luedtke Engineering Co. U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan W. Feldman denied the motion due to the fact that New York case law is not clear on applying Labor Law Section 241(6) to the type of work plaintiff was doing, nor is it clear that the observable danger would absolve defendant from liability under Section 200 of the Labor Law.Plaintiff Fellenz was employed by the Army Corps as the projects construction inspector and representative. His duties included observing the progress of the work, insuring that the break wall construction met specifications, completing quality assurance reports and plotting drawings. Fellenz was present on the construction site daily from June 1996 through May 1997.

Growth in exposure prompts change in coverage provision Are your homeowners clients concerned about their exposure to personal injury claims? They should be, especially if they have adolescent children. In the Internet age, however, the potential for personal injury claims has increased substantially. Thanks to the global reach of e-mail, blogs, and shared sites such as MySpace and YouTube, damaging comments can be instantly transmitted to millions of people throughout the world and live on, so to speak, in electronic files that may never be fully expunged.

When you are involved in a car accident, there are a number of things you should know, but unfortunately, this information is not readily available. This article discusses what you need to know about personal injury claims long before you even think about hiring a lawyer. If you are injured in a car accident, and the accident was not your fault, you have the right to sue the owner and driver of the other vehicle for damages. These damages are paid to you by the other drivers insurance company. Tort law does not compensate the other driver for any injury he or she may have suffered as a result of causing the car accident. However, separate from tort law, all automobile insurance policies sold in Alberta provide for me payment of accident and disability benefits. Unlike tort law, both you and the driver of the other vehicle are entitled to receive the same accident and disability benefits.

It is almost worthwhile getting “whiplash” preprinted on a claim form to save time Turning first to the real increase, the recently published report by the governments Statistical Service on Road Accidents in Great Britain in 1996 provides a clue. Injuries in 1996 totalled 317,000, which was an increase on the 307,000 in 1995. Fatalities, however, fell slightly to 3,598 from 3,621. Both figures had been generally falling since the mid 60s, when they peaked at just under 8,000 fatalities and just under 400,000 injuries. This has doubtless arisen for a whole number of reasons, including compulsory seat belts and crash helmets, drink drive regulations, air bags, better car design, and many others. To achieve this reduction over that period was particularly remarkable, because the vehicle population in the mid 60s was 13 million compared with slightly over 26 million now. Most of this increase in vehicle population can be found on the M25 each morning and evening!

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Demand for chartered jet flights is up sharply around the country as deep-pocketed travelers try to avoid new security delays at major airports. A charter service in Southern California reported a 110 percent increase in customer calls. A Wisconsin company said customers are booking longer interstate flights normally handled by commercial airlines. And in Brunswick, Maine, Adam Websters charter flight referral service has been swamped for a week. Charter companies — whose planes range from single-engine four- seaters to Boeing 737s with conference rooms and bedrooms — boast of smoother check-ins than larger carriers and a feeling of safety that comes with knowing everyone on a flight. Caption: Analyzing Real Estate Investments. Stephen N. Carter, principal, The Carman Group, LLC at The Learning Annex teaching new investors about quantitative and qualitative tools for investing in property.
In recent years, investing in most real estate projects has generated very handsome returns. Other than the office markets in some high-tech areas, the returns on real estate have far exceeded the returns on all other investment categories. There are a variety of reasons why real estate, in general, has performed above other investment types, one of which is the unusually low interest rates. These investments included a variety of real estate types, such as single-family housing, multi-family office buildings, hotels, raw land, assisted living facilities and industrial properties. Investments were made by direct equity mezzanine funding, mezz equity and mortgages. All the investments were made with outside managers.

The presentation will be based on a synoptic article being developed by the ACS and the Office for Health Promotion of Northern Illinois University. Ruth Corcoran of ACS will describe a proposed collaborative research agenda, suggesting that two sets of consensually developed guidelines are needed to promote such research: one set to facilitate dissemination of what experts already know to the public and providers (including exercise specialists); and a second set to facilitate further collaborative research. Speakers from CDC and NCI will outline what is known about these topics, and how exercise scientists can contribute to further development (see accompanying abstracts). Presenters will recommend a process to develop research priorities, involving cancer experts, public health scientists, and relevant interest groups in AAHPERD. Members will be asked to contribute ideas for a research agenda. The Cancer-Exercise Agenda: Opportunities in Applications Research

Though the paraphernalia might sound suspiciously like the contents of Whitney Houstons vanity case, drinking from the pipe actually makes (almost) perfect scientific sense: the liquid hits a whole different set of buds. Sebor is the only absinthe available in the US (via a rather wonderful internet loophole) that actually contains wormwood, the herb that makes a serving of absinthe more than a strong ass hit of anise liquor. Get to PayPalling now and your magnum case of Sebor might just arrive in time for some Halloween spookyfests!
The green fairy has landed. Thats not code. Absinthe, the notorious pale-green liquor that inspired a generation of French artists and was reputed to cause madness, is legal in the United States for the first time since 1912. The first bottles — Viridian Spirits Lucid — hit shelves in New York in June. Despite its $60 price tag for 750 milliliters, it has proven so popular that Viridian is working overtime just to meet demand there before expanding into other markets. It is, however, available online.

Why do we concern ourselves with such things? The concept of the contract allows people to make commitments between themselves that the state will enforce–the result being future stability of relationships, avoidance of conflict, and general societal harmony. How odd, then, to apply these concepts to family law! It might fairly be said that the whole of family law concerns itself with addressing members of society where relationships are no longer stable, where conflict abounds, and where harmony has ceased to exist. The concept of family, I think, arises only in the context of some directly stated or some implied commitment. A husband promises to share his life with his wife. Beyond the formal commitment of marriage, separate or same-sex couples can likewise expressly, or by implication, promise to share their lives with their partners. Parents promise to care for and support their children. Each of these commitments could be said to be some form of express or implied commitment between people.

Whenever you are asked, “Are you ready
for Christmas” do you feel like the real question is, “Have you finished
your Christmas shopping?” Has the exchange of “presents” begun to interfere
with your ability to be truly “present” at Christmas time?
If your gift-giving list is so long that you secretly hope your recipient
isnt home when you drop off their gift, I encourage you to remember that
it is your presence that is most valued.
Giving the gift of presence allows you to be truly in the moment with the
one you are with.
Businesses eager not to give offense, lawyers eager to litigate, enemies of custom eager to bleach and flatten all do their best to grind the day down. But if we keep it in our homes and churches, and, most important, in our hearts and our actions, then we will know when to keep it with our lips.

WASHINGTON — Construction of new homes and apartments plunged by 17.6 percent in March, the biggest decline in 14 years and another possible indication that rising interest rates are beginning to take a toll on the economy. Meanwhile, wholesale inflation shot up 0.7 percent as energy prices soared. The Commerce Department reported Tuesday that builders started construction on new homes and apartments at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.84 million units in March, down from 2.23 million units in February. “This is a bit of a shocker,” said David Seiders, chief economist for the National Association of Home Builders. “But I dont think this represents a fundamental downshift in the housing market. There were special factors behind it.”
The number of new single-family homes under construction in El Paso County fell for the second straight month in February, but industry officials arent fretting yet. Construction began last month on 584 single-family homes - down 12 percent from the 664 homes started in February 1999. Combined with Januarys figures, which also declined from the previous year, single-family housing starts for the first two months of 2000 in the county were down 11.5 percent over the same period in 1999.

At North Carolinas Outer Banks, I walk the beach at dawn. The ocean reflects sunrise. Waves roll in like liquid light, and sea foam sinks into the sand beneath my feet. According to neuroscience, the sight of each wave lapping onto shore transforms my whole physiology. Doctors have learned that our state of mind plays a primary role in our health and aging. The mind/body connection is at work every moment of our life, and were using it to either create health or promote bodily wear and tear. Sad or negative thoughts cause our brain to produce neurotransmitters that weaken our immune system. Thoughts of hostility induce rapid heartbeat and heightened blood pressure. Anxious thoughts also raise blood pressure, and cause hand tremors, cold sweat, a knotted stomach, and pervasive weakening (as when we say “sick with dread”). On the other hand, happiness, love, and compassion produce physiological changes that lead to better health, because the neurotransmitters generated by these feelings stimulate the immune system and increase resistance to disease. Major religions and great spiritual traditions advise against negative thoughts. Christianity admonishes not to condemn or enact hostility against others. The Upanishads instruct: “Never criticize anyone. Never entertain negativity.” Being negative is hazardous to our health. We could say it violates Natural Law. If you prefer religious terms, its “against Gods will.”

More than Meets the Eye Risk managers dont have to satisfy a formal education requirement to get their jobs, but they still ought to be conversant with the content of insurance contracts. That familiarity, however, has a downside because it can be the source of a false sense of security. When they talk about appraisal under the terms of a property policy, textbooks, instructional materials and, instructors have, always had a tendency to presume that the parties have resolved all coverage issues before they resort to appraisal. Thats probably the effect of common sense lurking in the subconscious and exerting a powerful influence over what gets written or spoken. An appraisal is an expensive proposition and each party has to bear a share of the cost. Because the appraiser cant consider coverage issues, the thing to do is resolve them before incurring the expense of an appraisal. Thats just common sense.
INVESTMENT advisers say the best returns for the year are likely to come from the property market. And real estate investment trusts (REITs), which offer dividends from rental income derived from buildings invested in or owned, should become a very interesting investment option.

The Public Health programme 2003-2008 is a key strategic tool for the development of health policy within the EU. The programme provides the means to support actions in areas where the EU can make a difference, the ultimate goal being to contribute to a high level of physical and mental health and well-being throughout the EU. The programme is open to institutions, associations, organisations and bodies in the health field.
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

For Alexander Rodchenko, the years following the Russian Revolution heralded not only vast social upheaval, but also a sea- change in how the photographer and graphic designer viewed his art. More than half a century after his death, the Hayward Gallery presents Revolution in Photography, a major retrospective of this hugely influential innovator. Shot from unexpected angles that challenge the perception of the viewer and pull the abstract from the everyday, Rodchenkos photographs charted the shifting dynamics of life in the Soviet Union. Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

* Market grows on the back of olive oil
O IL Control of oil has been intimately linked to broader political, military, and economic objectives. These larger foreign policy concerns have shaped the issue of control and have, in turn, been shaped by it. For example, all the major postwar doctrines of U.S. foreign policythe Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Carter, and Reagan doctrinesrelate, either directly or indirectly, to the Middle East and its oil.The history of oil and foreign policy also provides important insights into the relationship between private power and public policy that are crucial to understanding the nature and development of U.S. foreign policy in the twentieth century. Finally, the impact of oil use on the environment has become almost as important an issue as access to oil.

The SMS Forum, a non-profit organization
with a mission to develop, foster and promote SMS (short message service)
to the benefit of the global wireless industry will disband by July 27,
2007, and take down its web site by the end of 2007.
The SMS Forum served as a useful tool for the industry through its
workshops and its liaise with other industry and standards organizations.
Since its inception, the SMS Forum provided operators, solutions providers
and developers with an important platform to exchange ideas and present
solutions to the challenges that the industry faced. This process has been
very effective, and the maturity of SMS means that the need for further
promotion of the standards is now no longer necessary.
Many web designers have been looking for good solutions for sending SMS
messages from web sites. Until now this has been very difficult due
to many different solutions from GSM network providers to access
their SMSC servers. Some providers use XML, others use X.25 and other
specific SMSC protocols: HERMES, UCP, CIMD, and SMPP. This problem
has been a severe obstacle for easy integration of Internet based
services to communicate with GSM phones.

Earning money is half the battle. Keeping it is the other half of the battle. In the United States alone, over 24 million new lawsuits are initiated in our Courts every year. Every individual may face 3 different lawsuits on average in their lifetime. With these sobering statistics, one must seriously contemplate how to protect themselves and their assets from potential loss. We use a centuries-old device with a modern twist. We use an irrevocable trust based upon the laws of a State long known for its anti-creditor stance. This device is known as a Delaware Asset Protection Trust.
As business owners many of us are so subjected to the busy day-to-day, hands-on operation of our businesses that we dont devote enough time to protecting our assets. In the previous articles my two colleagues, Dale Berg and Jim Nellis, discussed asset protection methods including the purchase of keyman life insurance, buy-sell life insurance, disability coverage, and other insurance products. There are other significant risks that owner/operators will want to address.

Rebounding from a B-month low, total housing starts surged 5 percent, up from 1.54 million units in April to 1.96 million in May. Single-family starts were up 2.1 percent in May as well. The National Association of Home Builders reported increases in new home and apartment construction in May for three regions: West, up 15.8 percent; South, 8.5 percent; and Northeast, 1.7 percent.
WASHINGTON — The housing market is still booming, with construction of new homes rising 0.2 percent in May. Builders rushed to break ground on new projects to meet strong demand fueled by low mortgage rates. While the May increase was slightly below the 0.6 percent gain that had been forecast, economists blamed a decline in the South on the temporary effect of unusually wet weather in Florida and other parts of the South. They noted that permits for new construction, a key indicator of future strength, came in at a solid annual rate of 2.050 million units. “We still have a red-hot housing market,” said David Seiders, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders. “Surveys of both lenders and builders are showing tremendous ongoing strength with little or no hints that anything is starting to fall.”

Presented at the 55th Annual Meeting
Busting bugs resistant to antibiotics could, in future, be as easy as squeezing a stress ball, according to a UK company. Urofoam has created a new range ofsqueezable stress balls that have a layer of a potent antibacterial agent able to kill so-called superbugs like MRSA and Clostridium difficile. When the stress ball foam is released from the mould its covering of silicones and waxes help prevent adhesion. Stables says, The tricky part is getting the lacquer to stick and this is where the black magic comes in. He wont reveal exactly how they get the antibacterial coating to adhere, as it gives Urofoam an advantage over competitors, but reveals that it involves air gun spraying at pressure. Mark Gardner, director of Premier Finishes, which makes the antibacterial additive, says, Hygienilac is metal-based and is completely IN stable, unlike [antibacterial agent] silver, and is unique as the only product that can kill C difficile at spore level. Hygienilac has been endorsed by the NHS for controlling the spread ofsuperbugs and works by hoovering up any nearby nutrients, starving the bacteria to death.

A house in Hampstead that has hidden its north London origins behind a new Japanese personality, has just come on the market. Two adjoining houses in Fitzjohns Avenue were replanned and redesigned with specially selected materials. A stream runs along the full length of the properties (which are reached by means of a slatted bridge) and a sunken Japanese garden is filled with pebbles, ferns and bamboo. One of the houses only is for sale at an asking price of pounds 435,000 through Goldschmidt Howland (0171-435 4404). The main bedroom has a low-level custom-made Japanese platform bed and sliding shoji cupboards made from yellow rice paper. Housebuilders have just had their busiest month for two years and the prospects look good, according to the latest report for the House Builders Federation. New homes have increased their market share to almost 13 per cent from the 10 per cent at which they had been stuck since 1988. John Stewart, an independent housing economist and author of the report, says they are managing to fill a gap in the market because of sensitive prices and attractive marketing. “When I did some research with the Halifax we found a lack of confidence among intending homebuyers: they were not sure they would be able to sell their present homes. In buying a new home the hassle-free factor is very important,” he said. This bears out evidence from builders such as Barratt of a new breed of buyer at the top end of the market who, frustrated by the lack of good property available, is turning to developers for the first time. The success of Barratts award-winning development, Lakeside Grange, in Weybridge, Surrey, looks like being matched by its latest enterprise on the River Thames at Chiswick. At the recent opening of Royal Thames Crescent, all but three of the 19 five-bedroom houses and 13 two-bedroom apartments, with prices ranging up to pounds 600,000, have been sold.
